Support for Ukraine’s EU Accession
On March 18, Lithuanian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sigitas Mitkus, together with his colleagues from Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Finland, and Sweden, sent a joint letter to Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos and Poland, which currently holds the EU Council Presidency. In the letter, they expressed support for European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s statement regarding Ukraine’s potential EU membership by 2030. They urged an acceleration of the accession process and emphasized the necessity of opening the first negotiation chapter group, “Fundamentals,” as soon as possible, with the goal of opening all remaining negotiation groups by the end of 2025.
“This letter calls on the European Commission and EU member states to strengthen their support for Ukraine’s EU accession process. The time to act is now,” emphasized Deputy Minister S. Mitkus.
Ukraine is making significant progress in implementing reforms. A peaceful and prosperous Ukraine is strategically crucial for the future of our nations and the entire continent. Ukraine’s EU membership is not only an investment in Ukraine’s security but in the security of all of Europe. Achieving these strategic objectives requires the unity and determination of both the EU and Ukraine, without being overshadowed by bilateral issues.
