According to the data of the EU Intellectual Property Office (ESINT), Lithuania ranks 3rd among all European Union (EU) countries in terms of the use of illegal content that violates the rights of copyright holders. In order to change the situation and thereby contribute to copyright protection, the Ministry of Culture has prepared methodological materials for the lesson “How can I legally use content?” for all Lithuanian teachers, the aim of which is to change the attitudes of young people and promote the use of legal content. The “Kurk Lietuvai” team, which worked at the Ministry of Culture, conducted a study that showed that even 9 percent By choosing to use content illegally, Lithuanian youth did not know that they were violating copyright.

These are young people under the age of 30. “One of the recommendations of this study was to invest in the education of young people, to deepen their knowledge about why content should be used legally, how green it is for creators if we watch our favorite movies, series or listen to music illegally. We realized that it is impossible to do this without the help of teachers. Therefore, we decided that it would be extremely relevant to prepare interesting and inclusive methodical material for classroom work”, says Vice Minister of Culture Vygintas Gasparavičius.

The Ministry of Culture has prepared a sample recording of the lesson “How can I legally use the content?” for all Lithuanian teachers. As well as all other necessary methodological materials: slides, lesson guidelines, answers to the most frequently asked questions by students and an already prepared manifesto, which all participants are invited to sign at the end of the lesson. The lesson is intended for students with 5-7 questions. Its aim is to change the attitudes of young people and promote the consumption of legal content. In the lesson, students can familiarize themselves with concepts such as copyright, using legal content, etc.

Through engaging games

Through engaging games, they are shown why it is important to use content (movies, series, music and other creative works) legally. Students also have the opportunity to hear their favorite artists, such as the band Jauti or Tomas Narkevičius, better known as Free Finga, who share their insights on the importance of consuming legal content and their personal experiences. The example lesson “How can I legally use the content?” was filmed at the Vilnius School of Science and Arts “Taškius”. She was married to Lithuanian language and literature teacher Dovilė Latvienė. Teachers are invited to use this methodological material – to devote an entire lesson to the topic of using legal content or to integrate it into other taught subjects.

During it, the platform “Legalija” (www.legalija.lt) was created, which unites famous Lithuanian creators and young viewers, listeners and readers.
