Lithuania has dropped from 34th to 35th place in the Global Innovation Index this year, the Innovation Agency said on Friday.

“Ranking 35th in the Global Innovation Index is a truly significant achievement – especially given today’s economic and geopolitical challenges,” Kotryna Tamoševičienė, head of the agency’s Research and Analysis Department, said in a statement.

National Progress Plan

“Although this is the second year in a row that we have achieved the target set in the National Progress Plan, we cannot relax. Lithuania has favourable conditions for the development of a strong innovation ecosystem with high added value, as demonstrated by our country’s high ranking in the areas of unicorn value or use of technology,” she added.

According to the agency, for the second year in a row, Lithuania is ranked first among all countries in terms of the value of unicorns in relation to the size of the country’s economy.

Lithuania’s indicators improved

Tamoševičienė says Lithuania’s indicators improved because Baltic Classifieds Group became the country’s third unicorn. Moreover, Lithuania continues to maintain the first place globally in terms of the share of employed women with higher education.

The Global Innovation Index is compiled and published annually by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). The index aims to provide the most comprehensive picture of a country’s innovation sector, using around 80 relevant indicators and highlighting each country’s innovation strengths and weaknesses.
